Description
St. Charles, IL - May 27, 2023 - The St. Charles History Museum is excited to announce the opening of its newest exhibit, "(Almost) Another Century of Progress: St. Charles and the 1933 World’s Fair." This immersive exhibit takes visitors back to the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago, highlighting St. Charles’s significant role in this historic event. The exhibit will open on June 1, 2023, and will run through the end of the year.
The exhibit explores the roots of the 1933 World’s Fair, the planning process, and the impact of the Great Depression on its execution. It also delves into the contributions of St. Charles to the fair, including the participation of local businesses and residents. One of the exhibit’s highlights is a section dedicated to the centennial celebration of St. Charles, which coincided with the World’s Fair. This part of the exhibit celebrates the town's history, its resilience during the Great Depression, and its ongoing commitment to community and progress. It includes the story of the St. Charles American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, representing the entire American Legion at the grand opening of the Pantheon Building on the Midway.
"(Almost) Another Century of Progress" also showcases the technological advancements displayed at the fair, such as the House of Tomorrow, which featured futuristic amenities like the automatic dishwasher and electric garage doors. The exhibit also highlights the fair's motto, “Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Conforms,” which emphasized the collective progress of the United States.
The St. Charles History Museum invites everyone to experience this unique journey back in time. "(Almost) Another Century of Progress: St. Charles and the 1933 World’s Fair" is not just an exhibit but a celebration of the enduring spirit of St. Charles and its significant role in one of the most memorable events in American history. Entry is free with regular Museum admission. The Museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 11 AM to 4 PM.
